Women in power

>> 18 February 2009

Most of y'all know already that I have strong feelings about women in powerful positions. The other night, the subject came up in a conversation with an old friend. Ed works in a gummit organization with several women. When he took this job, there were a couple other men there. Both have left for various reasons. Ed is second in commmand of his department, which means... yes, a woman is in charge.

Now I've known Ed for quite a while and have every reason to trust in his veracity. I've also observed, personally, some of the inner workings of this type of organization. And today, I am more convinced than ever that women should not be in positions of authority. OK, I'll admit it (for those of you who don't already know this about me)... I believe women should be at home raising their children. Don't start throwing tomatoes. I know some women have to work. Circumstances, obviously, sometimes trump ideals. However, IF a woman has the option...

Poor Ed never knows, from one day to the next, what he'll be walking into each morning. One day, it'll be all smiles and praise and the next virtual hysteria over piddlin' stuff. (Idano whether she's PMSing or menopausal. Either way, I sure feel sorry for Ed). In meetings, the women sit around and talk about all sorts of femininely topics, forgetting there's one man in the room. First of all, ladies should never talk about such things in mixed company. Second, the boardroom is no place for that sort of socializing.

Here's the thing. Men are compartmentalized. Their lives are cubby-holed, so they don't, as a rule, bring their private lives to the office. Women's lives are completely integrated. No cubbies. Women, by their very nature, take their entire lives everywhere. God made us that way. I have no doubt that He knew what He was doing.

Vive la difference!
No matter how some try to deny it, men and women ARE different. Our grandparents knew this. How did the information not get passed along to us? How can so many people have such stifled common sense that they believe lies when deep inside they must know better?

It does warm my heart to find so many parents raising their children with 'old-fashioned' values. There might just be hope for mankind, after all. Maybe the next generation will start turning things around. What do y'all think? Is the pendulum about to head the other direction again?

Am I a failure?

>> 25 August 2008

I'm about to say something that is not going to be very popular with some readers.

Remember when we said that if women ran the world, it'd be a better place?
We were wrong.

I've been watching PBS's Florida Channel quite a bit lately. One thing, in particular, really stands out. I'm seeing lots of women. In fact, most of the PIC's (persons in charge - of the committee or panel or council or...) are women. I've come to the conclusion that's at least a good part of the problem with our government these days. Women should not be in those positions.

I grew up in the middle of The Great Liberation. Even then, I only half-heartedly thought it might be a good idea... maybe. When it came down to it, I chose to follow a more traditional path. I turned down a teaching scholarship to get married and become a full-time homemaker. I've never regretted that decision.

All this equality nonsense... well some of us are smart enough to reaize that would be a backward step. Why would a prize filly want to be a pack mule? Don't get me wrong. I know women CAN do many 'men's jobs', but why would they want to? What is it that makes some women feel incomplete without their names on an office door? And once they have that, why do they still want more? Maybe the prize they're pursuing is really fool's gold.

I do realize that a lot of ignorant men have a tendency to be condescending toward women. But two wrongs have never made a right and never will. Besides, very few of those ignorant men will have a different attitude just because a woman becomes their boss.

Call me old-fashioned, but I enjoy beng a W-O-M-A-N. I've never been offended by being referred to as one of the girls. Certainly having a door opened or a chair pulled out for me doesn't insult me. On the contrary, such gentlemanly niceties make me feel cherished and appreciated.

Far be it from me to step down off this pedestal into a corner office. The view is so much better from up here. I have no higher degrees hanging on my walls. When I walk into a restaurant, no one asks for my autograph. I shop the bargain bins and have no designer labels in my closet. I'm not listed in any Who's Who. But my name IS in the LAMB's Book of Life. I will count my life a success if, at its end, He says to me 'Well done, good and faithful servant!'

About Me

My photo
I love JESUS! I'm a 7th-generation Florida native, dyed-in-the-wool Southron belle. I just recently dusted off my genealogy notes and, thanks to a long-lost relative, nearly doubled the details. We started home schooling when only 'outlaws' did it and still enjoy a daily quest for knowledge. These days, the family spends a lot of time birding, butterflying, spending as much time in 'the woods' as possible while they're still here.
