decorating dilemma

>> 09 December 2008

OK, so I finally decided - well, tentatively - that I want to try using the PARIS letters I got 2-3 years ago as a kind of base for the family room theme. Maybe. 8-}

I found this great b/w picture at Kirkland's at a wonderful reduced price. But, IMO, it just isn't working here. I'd like to paint the mantel, but Duller heartily dislikes the idea. Personally, I'd like to paint it white, but there are white tiles... too much? How about black? I really wish it was a bit more substantial, knowwhutImeanVern? Anyhow, I know y'all are geniuses (so who wouldn't be next to me? lol) when it comes to decoration inspiration. What can I do to make this work? Would a darker stain cut it? Should I move the letters to another room and head back to the drawing board here?

No worries, the letters aren't going to stay on the mantel. I'll probably hang them vertically somewhere nearby. So go ahead and dazzle me with your brilliance. 8-]

Hi, Sophie. Here's my idea for making the mantle more substantial. First I thought, "Take the mantle off the wall and remove the top section, then replace it with a heavier, deeper and wider top piece." THEN I thought of just laying a nice heavy plank on top of the mantle just as it is. It will need holes drilled and dowels inserted, glued, etc. to make the attachment, but this will eliminate the need to remove the mantle from the wall. And... the best part is that it WILL need painting to make old and new match. I vote for a deeper shade of white (creamy white or a very pale taupe). I think black would be too stark on a bulky mantle.

About Me

My photo
I love JESUS! I'm a 7th-generation Florida native, dyed-in-the-wool Southron belle. I just recently dusted off my genealogy notes and, thanks to a long-lost relative, nearly doubled the details. We started home schooling when only 'outlaws' did it and still enjoy a daily quest for knowledge. These days, the family spends a lot of time birding, butterflying, spending as much time in 'the woods' as possible while they're still here.
