Another mow-ron has done a study. Sitting in a room with a small Christmas tree made non-Christians and those who do not celebrate Christmas feel 'less self-assurance and fewer positive feelings than if they hadn't been reminded of the holiday'. And they weren't even aware they felt this way! The perpetrator of this study says, '...the majority should take a closer look at how its symbols affect minorities.' (emphasis mine). OK, what's wrong with that statement?! Same ol', same ol... 300 million people should alter their entire existence so 3,ooo people won't feel so bad about themselves. Forget about the utter fallibility factor involved in such a 'study'.

When are we gonna put a stop to all this stupidity?! Seriously, if we don't get off our collective backside and put our big hairy foot down, we're gonna wake up in a third world country. Without leaving home!

Thursday's Thoughts

Unless you're in a cave somewhere, you've heard about the pastor intent on burning Korans on 9-11. I've heard people on the radio ranting about things like, 'if he wanted attention, he sure is getting it'. Well, DUH! Here's a novel idea. STOP TALKING ABOUT IT! Oh, wait, that would mean giving up your own moment in the spotlight. Talk about biting the hand that feeds ya!

On a kinda related note... I will NOT be getting Skype! They're offering 30 free minutes as part of their 'Happy Eid' promotion. Reckon they allow their employees to say Merry Christmas? Hades in a handbasket, people! GRRRR!!!!!

EDIT: I just read this: At least two dozen Christian churches, Jewish temples and Muslim organizations in the city have mobilized to plan inclusive events — some will read from the Quran at their own weekend services. Beam me up, Scotty! What fellowship has light with darkness? It's astounding how quickly, even eagerly, people are willing compromise their beliefs! *sigh*

SophieMae and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

So, I'm still wondering... where's the big economic relief? Every time THEY do something 'wonderful' for us, it gets worse. I spent well over an hour on the phone yesterday with J*****r bank about my credit card account. Due to a minor time miscalculation on my part, I went a TINY bit over my limit... for the first time ever. If I had gotten a payment in before finance charges hit, it wouldn't have happened. I have ALWAYS paid more than the minimum and have NEVER been late. So I asked for a one-time customer courtesy waive of the $39 OL fee. Absolutely no way no how would they even consider it. (In the past, they've been much nicer about OOPSes). OK, so I tightened my belt till my bellybutton mashed my backbone and paid more than enough to cover everything before the next statement. Was I surprised to see another $39 OL fee, even though my online statement said I was under the limit. Apparently, on the day between pay- and state-, a monthly deal I forgot to switch came in and ended up pushing me like $6 over. The first outsourced rep was no help at all. I asked to speak to a supervisor. Sorry, the super is busy, but he'll call you back. Been there, done that, still waiting. Finally, I'd had enough and said, 'close the account'. This involved transfer to another rep. Wonder of wonders... an American! She was super-sweet and very understanding, but had no authority to help me out. She was also very wordy and used way too many words to make her point. But that was better than the usual drones, so I listened. She told me exactly how much I needed to pay - by the 20th - to avoid any more problems. Turns out, if I had not paid so much, that one charge would have been denied and it wouldn't have gone OL. >:\ And she gave me the address to send a copy of the email that told me how much I should pay last time to avoid another fee... which I did... HA! Eventually, she transferred me to someone who might be able to reverse the fee now. This person was downright snotty and informed me that not only could she not reverse either OL fee, but even if I made a payment on the spot, I WAS going to have another OL fee. I never did figure that out and after going back and forth for about 10 minutes, I gave up and had her close the account then and there. By the time I hung up, my stomach was in knots and I'm sure my BP was through the roof. I walked outside till the skeeters ran me in, then made a payment, switched the monthly payment that caused the whole problem, printed the email to send them - heaven forbid they take my word or have records of their own correspondence - and plopped myownself in front of the puter with a huge glass of tea. This is the third account I've cancelled - most are raising interest rates to outrageous rates while they can. So, things are better now, right?

We don't

I've been reading a lot of discussions lately about the current 'holiday' season. Should we or shouldn't we? After getting carried away in a comment box on one blog, I thought I'd just go ahead and paste my response here. So, here are - for what they're worth - a few of my thoughts on the subject.

Skimming the many comments here, I reckon I'm in the minority. Our son, who is about to turn 28, has never 'celebrated' this holiday. And we don't participate in any church's 'alternative'. IMHO, that's just compromising with the world. I think it sends a horribly wrong message to the kids. Well, kids, we're not supposed to do that, but we can fudge a little and do something similar. Wrong is wrong, even if everybody's doing it. I'm a firm believer in the just a little dog poo in the brownies philosophy. 8-]

And, of course, there's the issue of desensitization. The Church already is becoming more and more 'liberal' all the time. If HE is the same yesteray, today and tomorrow, why does the Church 'need to change' to fit the current culture?

I also believe that Christians are far too eager to listen to and follow those who say what they want to hear. It's uncomfortable to be convicted that we're doing something wrong. Well, So-and-so over at Such-and-such Church says that's hogwash from puritanical, closed-minded stiffs and it's really OK to do *****. I reckon we'll find out who was right after the rapture, when we see what churches need to find a new pastor. ;} Anyhow, if I'm going to err, I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Perhaps, instead of thinking... Christmas was originally pagan and that's OK, so H'ween must be OK, as well... we should be questioning our Christmas traditions. Just a thought. )^;^(
